PhD position in the sociology of science : “epigenetics : from science to health”

The Univ. Grenoble Alpes solicits applications for a 3-year PhD position in the sociology of science within the interdisciplinary project ‘SYMER. A systems approach to new paradigms in metabolic and epigenetic regulation’ (please see below for more information on the project).

The PhD position will start October 1, 2018.

The successful applicant will conduct her or his doctoral research on the translation of epigenetic research from basic science to health products, medical practices and public health policies.

She/he will conduct qualitative research combining several methodologies (among which, semi-structured interviews and a content analysis of on-line discussion forums).

She/he will work in the social science PACTE research laboratory under the supervision of Séverine Louvel (associate professor in the sociology of science), with enrolment in the SHPT doctoral program in Grenoble (Sciences de l’Homme, du Politique et du Territoire).

Applicants with relevant background in the sociology of science and/or sociology of health will be preferred.

A previous experience in a qualitative social science study and data analysis is also required. Applicants should be fluent in French and have good English proficiency.

Applicants should send a cover letter, a CV and a 2-3 pages research statement describing the doctoral research to be pursued within the project. Letters of recommendation are welcome. The applications should be sent to

Interdisciplinary project ‘Symer A systems approach to new paradigms in metabolic and epigenetic regulation’.
Epigenetics -the reprogramming of genetic information by chemical modification of DNA and histones, triggered by environment and life-style, and leading to altered gene expression - is a fast-growing research area which is expected to shift the understanding of health and disease.
SYMER is a multi-scale experimental approach (cellular, animal, human, society) to how specific metabolic profiles directly affect the epigenetic reprogramming of a cell, potentially maintained for generations.
SYMER integrates different biological systems, their analysis, and the development of mathematical tools and predictive models, as well as the societal and political implications and expectations in the emerging field of epigenetics.
SYMER gathers molecular, structural and cellular biologists, physiologists, physicists, environmental biologists, epidemiologists, physicians, computer scientists, mathematicians and social scientists.
